about

The first verse and chorus of "Pillowcase" was originally written in 2021 by Cynthia Li in the middle of the night, which is when they tend to do all their writing. It reflects on the fragility of memories made with people we were once close to, and how those memories are irrevocably changed by time and perspective.

The second verse was written in 2023, when Cynthia and Schala formed Talented Asian Girlfriend and there was renewed impetus to finish the song. In the two years that passed between the first and second verses, the pain that initially inspired the song has had time to age and take on a different color.

There's apparently a bridge that never made it into any performance or recording of the song, but who knows what will come to pass in another two years?

lyrics

The doors closed behind me and I heard you change the lock
I untied my hands and I began to walk

Into the sunset
Empty roads ahead
All I remember is
Fond country highways
Taking me to see your parents
For the first time

Oh how I wish
For one sunny day
That I can keep inside an old pillowcase
And I'll take it out
When I've had my fill of rain
I'll imagine I'm that young fool again

It was sweet believing in you
It was sweet believing in you
It was sweet believing in you
It was sweet believing in you

Fields of yellow grass as tall as my hips
Inspecting the horizon to guess what I'll miss

Give me one token
That will not bend with age
Pressed like a poem
Between these struck out pages
Living in this carefree moment
For the last time

Oh how I wish
For one sunny day
That I can keep inside an old pillowcase
And I'll take it out
When I've had my fill of rain
I'll imagine I'm that young fool again

It was sweet believing in you
It was sweet believing in you
It was sweet believing in you
It was sweet believing in you
